The design and development, directed by William Heynes, Chief Engineer and Technical Director had begun in the late 1960s by the code name of project XJ27, with an initial shape penned by Malcolm Sayer, but after his death in 1970 it was completed by the in-house Jaguar design team, headed by Doug Thorpe. Post-1991 XJ-Ss are particularly sought after, not least because they use galvanised steel body parts. So well-executed were the XJ-S’s various updates, it managed to remain in production for an impressive 21 years, beating the E-Type’s sales record by attracting more than 115,000 customers worldwide.
